Cory's vision is to enable Santa Clara to become the safest city it can be through the best police department serving the community.
Cory’s priority as Chief of Police is to invest in the team, training, and technology required to achieve this vision.
Our Team: Our police department is 20% understaffed across all positions. We have fewer cops now than we did in the 1980's, while the population of Santa Clara has increased by approximately 50%. Think of all of the development we've seen over the last 40 years! We must get back to being 100% staffed, enabling us to support current public safety needs and prepare for any future investments required to keep pace with the projected development in the City.
Our Training: We must build a first-rate training center to ensure our officers receive the best training possible. Investing in the learning and growth of our people is essential to our overall effectiveness. The current facilities for supporting this critical training are either subpar or nonexistent. We have a prime opportunity to use land near the Police Department that is owned by the City of Santa Clara for this purpose, providing a cost effective solution to this issue. This will not only bolster the skills of our existing team, it will help us become the premier destination for talented recruits who want best-in-class training and development.
Our Technology: We must leverage technology to move the department into the 21st century. This will help our department to be as efficient as possible and maintain the high quality of policing that Santa Clarans deserve. We currently have many opportunities to improve and optimize our use of technology to enhance our effectiveness. For example, we should establish a Real Time Crime Center that will enable an even more rapid and coordinated response to crimes as they are reported. This and other technology investments will also help deter more criminal activity as we build our reputation for using cutting-edge technology to augment our ability to respond swiftly and effectively to criminal activity.
